While on the surface it may look like they're basically the same shoe, after wearing my pair of Rothy's for six months and two different pairs of Tieks for over four years, I've discovered many differences between the two.

Most Tieks shoes are made from 100% leather, usually patent leather for the flashier Tieks or distressed leather for a more muted look.

Tieks Boutiek has over 80 colors and styles of ballet flats, so there are a LOT of options to choose from.
If you want to have lots of options as well as more unique colors and styles to choose from, Tieks is a better bet.
Rothy's, on the other hand, has more variety when it comes to different types of shoes, such as sneakers, slides, and sandals, as well as their flats.

Another unique aspect of Tieks is that they offer Little Miss Tieks, which is their line of flats for girls.
Although both Tieks and Rothy's offer children's sizes in their shoes, Rothy's only offers children's sizes in their loafers and sneakers, but not their flats.

During 2020 they also ran a mask donation drive and in general, from what I found online, they seem to be more focused on charity than Rothys as a company.
Need Help With Tieks
Both Tieks and Rothy's have a signature design that they put on all of their shoes. For Tieks, it's their jarred feet on the bottom of their shoes.
Roti's signature royal blue stitched on the upper of their shoes is a little more noticeable, so it depends on which style you prefer.
I would recommend Tieks shoes to casual travelers or women who are constantly on the go and looking for a flat that folds up.
Tieks are also ideal for those who prefer a more traditional leather ballet flat and want a variety of color options.

Finally, Tieks is also great for those who want to support a company that gives back to charity and runs its own foundation.
These plastic bottles are broken down into small pellets, which are then made into coils of thread and 3D woven into each pair of shoes.

Another nice difference between Rothy's shoes and Tieks is that they are machine washable and therefore somewhat waterproof.
They also have removable insoles that are also washable, meaning it's easier to keep Roti's shoes clean and smelling great.
Tykes, on the other hand, are made of leather, which is one of the materials that is not friendly to water and is definitely not washable.

While both companies say their shoes fit right out of the box, I found that to be truer with Roti's flats.
Neither the Rothy's nor the Tieks stretch much, but I found the Rothy's molded to my foot better and didn't give me blisters the first few times I wore them.
It took me about a month to break in my Tieks the first time, and even my second pair, while they fit better, didn't fit nearly as well as my Rothys flats.
Even though I ended up sizing up to a 10 instead of a 9.5 for their flats anyway, it's still ideal that Rothy's offers half sizes for a better fit.

While Tieks only focuses on plain flats, Rothy's has five different styles of flats and a variety of other shoe styles.
In addition to their ballet flat toe, they have a pointed heel, a square, a Mary Jane style, and a moccasin style.
Maybe it's because they use recycled plastic bottles when building the shoes, but Roti's flats feel more breathable than Tieks.
However, it's still worth noting, especially if you live in warmer climates or are more prone to sweaty feet.
How To Break In New Tieks
It's much more subtle than the light teal on the bottom of Tiek's ballet flats and may be preferable if you're going for a specific look.
Rothy shoes are for anyone who wants to buy eco-friendly, machine-washable, stylish and versatile shoes.
They're also ideal for anyone looking for something a little different from the curved flat thumbs, as they have four other flat styles to choose from.
Finally, Rothy's are a bit cheaper than Tieks, so they're good for those on a bigger budget but don't want to sacrifice quality too much.

I've gone into some of these things above, but let's really look at the pros and cons of Rothys vs Tieks and which shoe wins in some of the most important categories.
Comfort is huge when it comes to shoes and especially when it comes to flats, which are not the most comfortable style of shoe.
Neither the Roti nor the Tiex provide much support, as they are still flat, but in terms of overall comfort, the Roti wins by a mere nudge.
Although Tieks and Rothy's are comparable in terms of comfort, once you've had a chance to break in Tieks, Rothy's are more comfortable.

This is probably more of a personal preference, but I also find the materials in Rothy's to be more breathable and lightweight compared to the leather in Tieks.
That said, I wear both my Tieks and Rothy's for days at a time when I'm hiking long distances, and they're both pretty comfortable for the occasion.
The only exception is if you have wider feet, in which case Tiex would be a better option.
The reason for this is the narrowness of Roti's shoes, especially for their occasions. People with wide feet often complain that their feet hang on the sides of their soles.

Tieks have a slightly wider construction and a more flexible opening to fit your feet, making it better for wide feet.
Note: If you are looking for comfortable hiking shoes, I would recommend the Allbirds Tree Runners or any of these waterproof hiking shoes.
They mostly run true to size, with some people fitting certain styles in half sizes or full sizes (depending on what's available).
I've found a size 10 to be the most comfortable for both my pairs of Rothy's and Tieks, and I usually wear either a size 9.5 or 10.

However, I would say that Rothy's wins the sizing round because they offer half sizes for most of their shoes.
Tieks still only offers full sizes, which can be annoying when shopping for flats, since fit is even more important than sneakers or other shoes that you can adjust a little more easily.
