Peering over the rim of Kilauea's caldera, I immediately feel dwarfed by the vast landscape before me.

I'm at the Jogger Museum Overlook and the sun has set. Now we tell stories about where we come from with a crowd of strangers in rapidly dropping temperatures waiting to see the crater's fiery glow in the night sky. The crater in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is our campfire, except we can't feel the heat coming from the crater, and the cool breeze—along with my ill-chosen cardigan—hurries me into the warmth of my room.
I booked two nights on top of Kilauea Volcano at Namakanipaio Campground through Volcano House, the only hotel inside the park. The camp, 3 miles from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, has 10 rustic cabins, their triangular shapes comparable to adorable dollhouses. Best of all: a night costs only $80, compared to a hotel that charges $228 a night.
I return to my hut after dark and look past the tall eucalyptus trees that surround the camp, luckily I don't have to drive too far. My phone says it's windy and a chilly 55 degrees, but I don't mind crossing my arms and shivering as I can't stop staring at the countless stars twinkling brightly above. I cannot fathom the speed at which the satellites circle the sky in their orbits around the Earth.
Inside, the vaulted ceiling interior is completely white, furnished with a full bed and a double bed. The cabin is not heated, but the big quilts keep me warm and I only need one power supply to charge my phone and camera batteries. Namakanibayo means "lashing wind" - perfect for a place with a loud rustling of trees that sounds like waves crashing into the sea. I let him sleep.
Go Camping In Hawaii Volcanoes National Park
The next morning I woke up with the roosters, eager to hike the 4-mile Kilauea Iggy Loop trail in the national park before the crowds. The trailhead parking lot is empty, which makes me feel good about my lodging choice. I take my time on a trail that descends 400 feet from Kilauea Iki's rim through forest to the crater floor. The views often make me stop and take photos, and the birdsong and the absence of people on the trail give me a sense of peace to discover it all on my own. In 1959, lava erupted from this crater in high fountains and a molten lake of lava leveled the surface of the crater, which I can't wait to walk on.
After about 45 minutes of walking and stopping, I reached the base, a step away from the ground, but the view of the huge crater from this angle was so beautiful, my feet were nailed to the ground and my eyes were letting it all take in. Nothing prepares you for that moment when you feel absolutely infinite—the way you feel when you first see Halemamaau Crater or stand in front of a 500-foot waterfall or contemplate the universe." My mind is overwhelmed by what it sees, but I" I'm glad why am i here , and I think about this incredible scene of mountain crater walls, black volcanic mounds, cracked earth and rain.
The rest of the route is over a flat, rough lava lake, where I shoot a 360-degree video of my surroundings in the center of the crater before making a steep 40-story climb back to where I started. After spending almost three hours on the trail, I return to my car in the now completely full parking lot. I drive to Volcano House for lunch.
One of the perks of staying in a cabin is being able to visit all the volcano villas I want. "You can sit by the fire, dine in the restaurants and use the Wi-Fi," the Volcano House receptionist told me over the phone before booking the room. - You can't lie down and sleep here. Another perk is the view of Halemaumau Crater; Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the crater in two restaurants and a seating area.

Reservations at Volcano House's fine dining restaurant, The Rim, are well-planned, so I find a free seat in the casual and very lively lounge of Uncle George's Volcano House. The menu is typical of Hawaiian bars, with items like Thai chicken wings.
Grilled cheese with pork pizza and tomato soup. I order fish and chips, a large portion with coconut and macadamia nuts. Sitting here after a morning full of adventure and excitement is very fulfilling. From my warm seat inside the volcano villa, I gaze out the windows at the hypnotic plumes of smoke rising from Halemama's pit, savoring the moment before returning to my room in the beautiful landscape of Kilauea.
