Lush and peaceful two-acre property located just minutes from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on the park's old access road. Wrapped in oya trees, sequoias, giant ferns, keili ginger and many other native plants, this is an ideal place to see the inspiring views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Overnight at Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island. Booked this cabin through the volcano house. It is about 3 miles from the main cabin and is basically a one bedroom cabin with a double bed and a bunk bed. Public bathrooms and toilets are nearby and each cabin has an outdoor area with a picnic bench where you can make a fire. It's almost like camping in a cabin. The beds were comfortable and came with pillows and a blanket (which you might need on cold nights as there is no heating). I think it is worth the price and better than camping.

I wanted my fiancé and I to be able to experience the volcano at night, but I didn't really want to spend the big bucks that the Volcano Hotel was paying. I'm sure it's nice and probably worth it for some people, but we just wanted a place to sleep after walking around the crater. I booked well in advance and only paid about $60 a night in the cabin. At this price, I didn't expect much. We opened the door to our cabin and it was a pleasant surprise. I have stayed in hotels that were not that clean! Large soft carpets, clean sheets, nice mattresses and electric lighting. what else do you need The bathrooms are in a separate building and are shared with the other campers. We never had to wait for showers or toilets, and the water pressure and temperature were great. After an evening walk around the crater and seeing the glowing lava from the visitor center and listening to an informative talk by a park ranger, we went back to the official hotel and had a drink in the bar. In fact, we took our drinks nearby to a living room with large wicker chairs and watched the volcano glow from there until the mist obscured our view. Then it was back to our cozy little cabin, where these soft blankets came in handy. It gets cold at this altitude, but we were warm and cozy all night. If you just want a good place to sleep so you can spend your hard earned money on other things, this is the place.

My party spent a night in one of the rustic cabins offered by Beit HaGashesh. The cabins are about 5 minutes' drive from the main hotel. The cabin was small but had a single bed and a bunk bed, lights but no hookups, the bathrooms and showers were a short walk away. Outside the cabin was a picnic table, BBQ and fire pit. We enjoyed a bonfire that evening (4000ft) after a busy day of sightseeing. A bundle of wood cost $13.00. The cabin was fine for the night and at only $93.00 was much cheaper than a $300.00 hotel room. Friends had a room with a volcano view, and while the view was special, the room was not luxurious.

Cabins & Cottages

The cabins were closed for a few years for renovations and recently reopened, so don't rely on the older reviews when deciding whether or not to stay here. I have camped a few times in the tent sites while the cabins were closed so I know this area well. I have seen the cabins both before and after renovation, although I have not lived in one yet. (The campground is pet friendly, but the cabins are not, and we hate leaving our fur babies in the kennel while we camp.) The cabins and campground are in a wooded area a short distance from the park entrance. The Volcano House runs it, so check with them for prices and bookings. You can easily walk to the visitor center and museum from the camping area, but you'll probably want to drive there if you plan to explore the rest of the park (although many people hike). Food available in the park at Kilauea Military Camp (accommodation is limited to military ID holders, but the dining area is now open to the public. Check ahead to be sure. The Volcano House is closed for renovations, but the gift shop has recently opened (snacks) available) and the dining room will open soon. There are also several restaurants in the town of Volcano, as well as two small shops.

Room tip: Buy your food at a grocery store or farmer's market for better prices. Expect some rain...Camp atop Kilauea Volcano at Namakanipaio Cabins Just three miles outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, these cabins offer comfort and solitude.
